1. BMI Surgery & Silver Cross Hospital’s weight loss surgery program has been named as a Center of Excellence by ASBS.

Center of ExcellenceBariatric and Minimally Invasive (BMI) Surgery and Silver Cross Hospital’s weight loss surgery program has been named as a Center of Excellence by the American Society for Bariatric Surgery (ASBS). The ASBS Center of Excellence designation recognizes programs with a demonstrated track record of favorable outcomes in bariatric (gastric bypass) weight loss surgery. Our program is one of only six in Illinois and the only bariatric surgery program in Will, Grundy, Kankakee and Southwest Cook Counties that has been recognized as a Center of Excellence.

To earn a Center of Excellence designation, BMI Surgery and Silver Cross underwent a series of site inspections during which all aspects of the program’s surgical processes were closely examined and data on health outcomes was collected.

2. Blue Cross Blue Shield Names Silver Cross a Blue Distinction Center for Bariatric Surgery

Silver Cross Hospital’s weight loss surgery program has been recognized by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois as a Blue Distinction Center for Bariatric Surgery℠. The designation means Silver Cross meets or exceeds stringent quality criteria that demonstrates reliability in delivering bariatric surgical care and better overall outcomes for patients. The Blue Centers designation was developed to help consumers locate quality care for bariatric surgery. Silver Cross is the first hospital in the Chicago southwest suburbs to earn the designation.

Blue Distinction Centers for Bariatric Surgery are required to have dedicated teams in place that provide a full range of weight loss surgery services, including inpatient care, post-operative care, follow-up and patient education. Silver Cross Hospital’s facilities include a new 36-bed inpatient unit specially designed and equipped to meet the needs of weight loss surgery patients and a state-of-the-art operating room designed for laparoscopic bariatric surgery.

The criteria for selection to the Blue Distinction Centers for Bariatric Surgery were developed with input from expert physician panels and national organizations. With a goal of improving patient health and safety, the selection process includes a comprehensive e valuation of a facility’s volume, processes and outcome measures, including survival rates, post-surgical complications and sustained weight loss at two years after surgery. A focus in development of the Blue Distinction Centers is to reduce complications of treatment and surgery and therefore better manage costs.

Dr. Brian Lahmann Initiated into American College of Surgeons

Joliet, IL (January 20, 2007)—Brian Lahmann, M.D. was among American College of Surgeons1,186 initiates from around the world who became Fellows of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) during convocation ceremonies at the College’s recent 92nd annual Clinical Congress in Chicago. Dr. Lahmann is a general, bariatric and advanced laparoscopic surgeon with Bariatric and Minimally Invasive (BMI) Surgery at Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet-one of the 100 Top Hospitals in the nation and one of six American Society of Bariatric Surgery’s Centers of Excellence in Illinois.

Board certified by the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Lahmann received his medical degree in 1998 from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He completed a general surgery residency at University of Kentucky where he was recognized with several awards. He also completed a laparoscopic and bariatric surgery fellowship in Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Specially trained in minimally invasive surgical procedures, Dr. Lahmann won the 2004 Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeon’s Laparoscopic Skills Competition, 2003 Society of Laparoscopic Surgeons and the 2003 University of Kentucky TOP GUN Laparoscopic Skills Competitions. He has also been recognized for several years as a Top Doc for outstanding patient satisfaction by Silver Cross Hospital.

By meeting the College’s stringent membership requirements, Fellow of the College have earned the distinguished right to use the designation of the Fellow, American College of Surgeon (F.A.C.S.) after their names. An applicant for Fellowship must be a graduate of an approved medical school; must have completed advanced training in one of the 14 surgical specialties recognized by the College; possess certification by an American surgical specialty board’ and must have been in practice in the same geographic location for at least one year at the time of his application. Before admission into Fellowship, the surgeon must further demonstrate ethical fitness and professional proficiency, and his or her acceptance as a Fellow of the College must be approved by three-fourths of its Board of Regents.

The convocation ceremony was a highlight of the five-day meeting, which also featured reports on research-in-progress, postgraduate courses, panel discussions, symposia, and scientific and industrial exhibits. Total estimated attendance at the Congress was 17,000 including approximately 10,000 physicians.

The American College of Surgeons is a scientific and educational organization of surgeons that was founded in 1913 to raise the standards of surgical practice and to improve the care of the surgical patient. The College is dedicated to the ethical and competent practice of surgery. Its achievements have established it as an important advocate for all surgical patients. The College has more than 70,000 members and is the largest organization of surgeons in the world.

Dr. Joyce Named Silver Cross “Top Doc” for Customer Service

Joliet, IL (April 27, 2007)—Christopher Joyce, M.D., Medical Director of Bariatric and Minimally Invasive Surgery was named one of 10 Top Docs on Silver Cross Hospital’s medical staff for outstanding patient satisfaction for its second quarter of the fiscal year (January, February, March 2007). This is the fifth time that Dr. Joyce has received this distinction.

For more than a decade, Silver Cross has regularly surveyed all patients at the hospital and compared, or benchmarked, its performance against over 2,000 hospitals using the Press Ganey patient satisfaction process. As part of the survey, patients are asked to rank their physician on several indicators including the time the physician spent with the patient, the physician’s concern for patients’ questions and worries, how well he/she kept the patient informed, friendliness and courtesy of the physician, and the skill of the physician.

Dr. Joyce Named Named Top Doctor by Consumers’ Checkbook

Joliet, IL (May 17, 2007)—To find out who the top doctors are around the country, Consumers Checkbook asked roughly 260,000 physicians to tell them which specialists they would want to care for a loved one. Of the over 20,000 doctors mentioned most often, Dr. Christopher Joyce was the only general surgeon in Will and Grundy counties listed as a Top Doctor for 2007.

Christopher D. Joyce, M.D., F.A.C.S., is board certified by the American Board of Surgery. He received his medical degree in 1986 from Loyola University Medical Center. Dr. Joyce completed a general surgery residency at Loyola University Medical Center where he was both Intern of the Year and Outstanding Chief Resident.
